Plastic canvas, the clear or white mesh found at your local hobby or craft store, has an infinite number of uses. Often the plastic canvas is pre-cut into shapes for the crafter's use. The letters of the alphabet are popular pre-cut patterns, and ways to fill in the mesh holes are only limited by your imagination.



Filling these plastic canvas patterns is a great way to teach small children basic reading as they work with the different letters of the alphabet.

* Yarn
* Blunt needle
* Thread
* Scissors
* Buttons
* Beads
* Glue
* Feathers
* Colored paper
* Magazine cutouts

1. Stitch up the holes with yarn. The most traditional way to fill in plastic canvas is by poking a yarn-threaded blunt needle in and out of the holes. Fill in the letter completely with yarn, or use the yarn to make smaller versions of the letter on the canvas. Be sure to tie off and secure all yarn ends to prevent unraveling.

2. Cover the plastic canvas holes with other objects. You can also thread your blunt needle with thick cotton thread and use it to secure buttons or beads tightly to the plastic letter, covering it completely. Beads with letters of the alphabet on them are available at any craft store, and could be worked into the design.

3. Affix other objects to the letters. Rather than filling in the holes of the plastic canvas letters, you can cover them with pictures cut from magazines that start with the same letter, or feathers, or bits of wrapping or other decorative paper. Glue the items directly to the plastic canvas letter, and allow it to dry thoroughly.
